Politics as Usual
I found a large handmade sign stapled to a utility pole in Brighton, MA that read "Kerry Healy is a fucking lying CUNT." It's not exactly how I would express my sentiments, but it didn't abash me either.
Kerry Healy is currently our republican lieutenant governor. I voted for her associate Mitt Romney, our current republican governer, because I believed we needed to keep our overly corrupt democratic legislature in check. I was happy with Bill Weld, our previous republican governor, and his ability to put partisan politics aside and do what is best for the state. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, ran on a slightly left of moderate platform but turned into an ass-wipe religious Bush republican when his aspirations turned toward becoming a presidential hopeful.
I am not against conservative politics. I have always believed that moderation is good. My issue is with the christian religious fanatics associating conservativism with fundamentalist christianity and attempting to strip me of my own personal liberties. As far as I can tell, they are attempting to turn western society into a christian version of the Taliban.
There is also seems to be an overt anti-semitism is the current form of conservative politics. If you don't believe me, then look to the rhetoric of the popular Pat Robertson, who supports Israel because the bible says its rise will trigger the destruction of the world and the second coming of Jesus Christ. I hope this belief isn't driving the policies of George Bush too?
Conservative politics should also not focus on destroying the economic viability of our middle class. Passing laws that restricts the rights of individuals in credit and bankruptcy law cases smells like political activism to me.
Look at the definition of conservative: "disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc and to limit change." I don't know about you, but over the past six years, I haven't seen us slowing down and limiting change.
It all sounds kind of loony to me.
